Building Empathy and Strengthening Community

Through art, we can express our universal emotions and recognize the common humanity that exists in all humans. No matter how different our lives are, art serves as a bridge that allows us to connect with one another. Through it, we see the world from an artist's perspective and gain an understanding of difficult life experiences.

We can collaborate with other artists to tell something different to the world, such as through theatre productions, community murals, group exhibitions, etc. Through storytelling, we can share personal stories and also listen to the stories of others.

Art is also a social commentary through which we address community issues—it raises awareness that such issues exist. It sparks important conversations that inspire communities to take action and try to solve those problems.

Through intergenerational art programs, youth and elders create art together, building respect across ages. Art can teach at any stage of life and helps pass down cultural traditions.

Art spaces, like galleries and public installations, also function as vital community hubs where people gather." Local art reflects community values, and public art expresses shared experiences, creating symbols of pride that say through art, "This is who we are."

Whenever we create art together, it expresses that we are all one when it comes to empathy and feelings, no matter where we live or which culture we belong to.
