Learning to Be Present and Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about paying attention to yourself in the present moment, simply noticing what is happening within and around you. Mindfulness has many benefits: it reduces anxiety, improves focus and concentration, increases self-awareness, and enhances emotional regulation.

You can practice mindfulness by noticing your breath, paying attention to physical sensations, and doing a sensory check-in (what do you see, hear, and feel right now?). You can integrate mindfulness into your daily life, such as through mindful eating, walking, listening, etc. You can also use meditation apps or take online guided sessions for mindfulness.

You can bring yourself into the present moment using physical presence techniques such as yoga, grounding exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation. If you are having difficulty managing your emotions, notice your feelings without judgment, name your emotions—what you are feeling—allow yourself to feel them, and then let them go.

If you ever feel lost, you can bring yourself back to this moment by practicing mindfulness. And here’s a pro tip for staying mindful: right now, notice 3 things you are seeing, 2 things you are touching, and 1 thing you are hearing.
